We are selling our nauticat 38. The closer we get to doing so, and moving back to land permanently, the more miserable I'm becoming.

I keep finding myself looking at other boats for sale. Guess I'm now an addict.

What sailing boat could I get for under 10k which:

Sails well
Can take anything the sea chucks at it
Shallow draft or shoal draft
Could at a push sleep 2 adults 2 children and a dog
Isn't very long (to keep fees down)
Comfy evening seating

Same list as every other sailing family probably.

Am I going back to Centaur ownership? Anything else suitable out there I should consider?

TY!

The nicest smallish yacht that I have sailed in the last 10 years was a Westerly Griffon, I think that £10k might get you one if you are waving ££££'s at a vendor, sails very well and decent to kip on. Took one along S Coast of Ireland and it was a joy to play with.

Sabre 27

Ticks all your boxes afaic. Fin if you value performance, twin keels if you want to be able to dry out (and the bilge keel version is no slug anyway)

There is a nice Kingfisher 26 for sale at £3500. go to the Website for more details. There is also a v. nice k30 for sale with everything done for more than £10k

Interesting ideas. Thank you! Some amazingly cheap, but very capable boats out there!

Yep, Clyst, I do remember Telos.

As you will see, you will get almost as many recommendations as people who respond - often a boat they have owned.

So, buy a boat you like in the best condition you can at the best price. You will know the boat is for you when you see it.

Quite right, we all recommend our own favourites, hopefully the boats we own! I would recommend the Varne 27 (there are several on the market this year) if you can accept 4'3" draft. If not, then the last hoorah for the design was the Weston 8500, probably between ten and twelve were built and so far we've caught sight of four lifting keel versions (3'3"/6'0"), two bilge keels (3'6") and the rest fins (4'3"). With fin and skeg design the hull is of that transitional period after the dull keel was abandoned and before the introduction of the flat bottomed soapdish. The result is a good sea boat that can be steered in reverse.

Accomodation is perhaps snug, but you asked for the boat to sail well - not a combination that really works below 40' ! If your family and friends are below 6/, then a Varne will be fine - it was designed for minimum windage and crew height of 5'10". Otherwise, the Weston variant has 4" greater headroom.

Think if I was in your position I would go for something radically different so you do not keep continually comparing it to the Nauticat. Either something very fast, or a catamaran or even, dare I say it, a cosy motor boat (but then a problem of fuel cost). Whichever way you go you have to minimise the feel of it being a backward step (imo).

I'm starting to wonder again about junk rigged boats. They're amazingly cheap and I've always hankered after a junk rig. That's definitely a sideways step rather than a direct step down maybe.

Thanks again all!

For something fast with a lifting keel how about this very tidy looking Evolution 26?

If you can sacrifice being able to take the ground, a Cutlass 27 will take anything the sea can throw at it. sleep and the kids, sail beautifully, and you'll probably be able to get a gold-plated one for £10k.

Jaguar 27 - should be able to get one for your budget. Excellent seaboat, large cockpit, can sleep 5 - I know I'm biased, I had one before my current boat(and it's faster than a Contessa 28!).
