The doormat was dented this morning by a promo mailing from the East London Boat Show. It promises loadsa new delights at Excel in January, plus all my old favourites.

Can anyone help me remember what my old London Boat Show favourite are, (apart from Earl's Court and a pint or three of the black stuff, which I can get in the Barmaids Arms around the corner, without schlepping across to Essex in the rain)?

Sorry Ken, but if you're starting to believe what people write in advertising literature then you're beyond our help.

Old favourites, that'll be a 30' cruiser for £2000 and £100 buys you a compass, towed log, fisherman's anchor and all the hemp rope you'll ever need.

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, but what pub do you go to?

A highlight of one show in the early seventies was a takeover of the final day's fashion show on the poolside by a number of well-refreshed exhibitors, wearing what looked like yak-fur coats with some rather dodgy accessories. Most of them, and half the models, ended up in the pool, iirc.

Ah come on, its going to be gggrrrreeeeeeaaattt this year!!

- New F-OFF great big Guinness stand.

- Engine race area, test your skills at changing a belt or what ever against other teams, no fun if you dont like them green engines!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

- Anchor watch!!! Laying & retrieving anchors, oh the realisticness of it all.

- Raised viewing areas!!!!

- Fog tunnel!!! Fog produced by special effects no less, eek!!! Be guided through the process of tuning-in a radar set. Simulated collision avoidance and navigation situations.

- Knot exhibition!! What ever….

- Fake seagulls flying over head through the entrance area!!! What will they think of next!!!

- An entire new layout, new stands, it all new new new….

Oh yeah and its 100 years celebrations for them green engines you love and hate so much!

I for one am looking forward to the Guinness(tm) show, glad to hear they have passed rules to puch back those cluttersome boat pedlers to make more room for the main event. Show me the oysters! (shelfish not boats, oh ok - maybe a quick look at the boats).

See, the excitement is building already /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Is anyone else thinking of boating it and staying at Galions Reach?

If they moved it to a more rural area..... just take off the roof and this would come for free /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It seems to me that the London Boat Show hasn't been doing too well over the past couple of years... just read what they are offering:
- buy one ticket get one half price
- kids under 15 get in free (2 per each adult)
- free showguide worth £7 with each order

Now how much is that going to cost to try and get people through the door? they don't seem to need to do this for the Southampton Boat Show.

I think you're probably right about this. It's complete and uninformed speculation on my part, but I reckon the London show has about two years left to (a) get sufficient paying punters through the door and (b) convince the boating industry that it's worth exhibiting at the Show, before it all goes pear shaped, and they close it down altogether or move it to somewhere like the NEC.

Just my opinion.....

SWMBO has just got back from an exhibition at the NEC today - Antiques, I'm afraid, nothing to do with boats - and was most impressed. Straight off the main-line station (or in from the huge carpark) and into the show, food OK and lots of places to sit! An enormous venue.
A great location for everyone around the country - IMHO.

Can you advise everyone that lives in London/Home Counties/South Coast where NEC is please?

I've heard its beyond a traffic jam worse than te M25, dont even start to go looking for it. Oh! Its also just about as far from the sea as is possible to get in the UK.

Most have never or will never go there!!

In a way, that makes it a better location as it leaves the rest of us lots of space in the car park for whippet racing and black pudding chucking - so, I'm not going to tell you.

Oh, go on then - North of Ealing Common.

As a resident of the Home counties(Well Hampshire) I can tell you that the NEC beats Excel into a coked hat & its easier & often quicker to get to.

The strange thing is that everyone told the organisers of the LBS that Excel was a crap idea & they still havn't woken up. They'd get a better attendance if they moved to a scout hut in Hammersmith than at Excel.
