Why is it that sellers of used boats think it's a selling point to proclaim in adverts that their boat is the 1992 London boat show boat or whatever? Is it an advantage that their boat was thrown together in a mad panic by the builders to meet the exhibition date, was finished on the stand overnight before the exhibition started and then had 3 zillion people trample over it during the exhibition. Apart from that, boat show boats are often prototypes or first off the production line which means that the poor owner has had to spend years sorting all the cock ups which were fixed on subsequent boats.
If I owned a boat show boat, I'd keep very quiet about it

PS Not a dig at gludy but just a general point

Mike,

that is a fair comment. The otherside of the coin is that they are often the best speced boats of that class that you could buy at the time. This means most of the Extras and Toys were dealer fit (not Amateur). This means that the wiring etc should be correct if you want to upgrade. Very few people also take delivery directly after the show. The V42 I was offered need another 30 days for PDI to ensure it was OK.

So as all boat purchases there are Pros and Cons,

Paul

Some "first off the production line" show boats are actually built far better than the subsequent boats. There is alot of time and money spent on creating the most perfect boat possible, I mean, these boats are alot of peoples and companies future and if the show boat don't sell, you can bet that any others that are produced will reach the same demise.
It would only be worth anything if it was a limited edition first off the line, but I think you are right, no point in buying a used and abused demo boat!!

Except that the main advantage is Price....The boat show models on Display often have 10% worth of extras for free, on top of any other offers and they correct any issues from people trampling all over it before you get them.

It is swings and roundabouts..

(I have bought an earls court example, a Glastron 175SX...)Immeadiately after the show they switched engine suppliers from Mercruiser to Volvo but that never affected me.

Even boats

013 /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
017 /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

from new model off production line have problems which should have been realised by number 4 or 5

and it still takes a long time to resolve them /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Would agree with that. Our 45 was the Dusseldorf show boat and had every single option off the list added, plus being the show boat was polished to a mirror finish and was beautifully prepared, a team of six guys spent a week cleaning and polishing it. The other up side is generally you get a bit of a discount and some extras thrown in. It is also nice to be at the show as a guest of the manufacturer and see you your boat in all its glory lit up like a jewel on the stand.

Our next boat is also this coming week Dusseldorf show boat and can't wait to see it on Sunday. If anyone is there come and have a look, ask for Trevor and I'll be kicking around somewhere.

I was informed by Stan prosser of prosser marine that boat show boat was the one built to a higher standerd than most, and that it was always a good point when it came to resale. My sealine f37 was 2000 show boat which ive had from new,iam putting her on market for spring time and iam now cosidering refit with all new soft furnishings seats in salon trims helm seat etc also new flybridge and cockpit seats. Q .would you do same or drop price and let buyer chose own coulers and do the work them selfs ?? ps this is not an advert A

Not that I ve noticed. I ve been offered a generous 3.5pct off, and this is also a demo boat. Forget it, how ever shiny it is.

Opinion that I have heard is that a re-fit does not add value, but will help sell it. I am doing a similar thing for mine this year, new interior cushions and canvas etc. I hope to make mine stand out and am using nice neutral cream leather for interior. Fingers crossed. If it is not tatty and just dated I would leave it to the new owners.

Cheers

I'd say the same if I was trying to sell you the Show boat /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I think it's definitely worth refitting upholstery and carpets before selling plus repairing any damage to timberwork especially as its not going to be that expensive compared to the value of the boat but don't forget that a professional dry clean can often improve soft furnishings dramatically. Ive bought and sold quite a few used boats and first impressions count; a clean up together boat is a sign that the owner has cared for her. It might not get you a higher price but the boat should sell quicker
This is always providing though that any new soft furnishings are similar or the same as the original manufacturers' supply. I looked at a used Princess 52 last year which the owner had tried to tart up with some cheap carpet and non-matching woodwork and it was a big turn-off. I see the boat is still for sale now

In 1975 we bought the 1971 Ocean 37 Earls Court boat. She had been taken from London to Germany by ship for a show there and then launched and sailed home.

When we bought her she had languished in Newhaven mostly unloved for a couple of years so the benefit of advertising her as the show boat (which the oily broker did) were largely lost since we were concerned with how she was, not how she might have been.

She did demonstrate what a popular colour orange was for furnishings in the early seventies!

I had already bought boat at southampton and was asked by sealine if it was ok to use her at the london show . As for refit iam planing on contacting sealine to obtain the proper seats etc. wich i think should not cost more than 10 k what do you think ? Yes iknow phone them and find out , Iwill do that after the weekend So for a bit of fun lets have some estimates .A

Not sure i am reading this right, but you're not changing you boat again are you??

But i can solve your problem with the F37, do you fancy a swap!!! S24 might act as a tender for your other boat!!! Eh Annan Eh Eh?? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good god! £10k! I hope not. You dont actually need new seats I guess just the existing foam re covered which should be much cheaper. You should be able to find a local company to do that for you and they should be able to match the material. I dont know how bad the carpets are but first step would be to send them away for a professional dry clean and then replace only those sections which are bad eg you might replace only the saloon + galley but not the cabins. If you're replacing only sections, then it might be worth asking Sealine to supply those sections only to get a match but if you're replacing carpets on the whole boat, then it might be cheaper to get standard carpet fitters in
I would say you should spend £3 - 4k tops

I'm a carpet fitter and upholsterer to trade, so i'd take the boat in any condition!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Ali no not changing boat seling sealine f37 which ive had from new, its getting abit too much looking after both of them, back in November i went up to orkney with orcades (the Malahdie) to have her fitted with stabilisers re paint and varnish and also brought up to MCA yellow code for iam going to do charters. Please dont say it wont work as i already have folk lined up( pm me and i will tell you who)
AS for carpets they are fine its just wear and tear on seats the boat has been well used by ourselfs main big trips have been round scotland st kilda 3 times and nearly every island on the west coast from Mull north, i think nothing of nipping over to Portree for a pint and a curry round trip of 44nm and thats night passage. The reson boat is up in Orkney is that the chap that did the re fit on her lives up there and has his own privete yard, and the guys still work for him and know the boat. here is a link for his new boat the one he bought after Orcades and also link for my new web site which is still under constuction. If i get it up and runing for this summer ishould be able to throw in a weekend charter for Yorkhill but cant promise .And yes i would love to have sealine s28 as ithink they are realy nice boats oh any suggestions on what to put on web site will help. Also have alook at web site for the boat pull we do each year for RNLI the site has not been updated but this year we raised 26k and have been nominated for RNLI supporter award 2006 we are in national final /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif and i will be down in Perth for regional award june sometime Cheers Annan
