Boat security

It would only require two or three bits and pieces + a LM555/LM 556 timer circuit and you can do anything.

It only requires a CR (capacitor/resistor) network to set up a time delay and a timer circuit to switch it off after about 10 minutes or what ever time you would like it to sound for /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It would not draw too much current either and as the main 'alarm' is inside the boat, the law regarding burglar alarms to shut down after 20 minutes does not apply. Anyway, it has been argued that it is not an 'alarm' as such but more a disorientation device /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The outside bit is brass just like a normal yale lock and the inside bit on mine is aluminium. I took mine apart and coveres any plated steel bits on wool fat (Anhyranus lanolin).

Its also mounted an my top wash board which I tend to keep inside when offshore.

Much good sense talked on this thread.

If you dont have much kit of value in the boat why not just leave it open?

On mine I leave the cabin door wide open, they'd do more damage in ££££s smashing my door open than the value of the GPS and NASA radio inside.

Thanks for asking the question, as one who has recently had boat and sheds rumbled in the last couple of months, I've been giving considerable thought as to what to do.

I agree with all of those that say that strengthening the hatch is a waste of time, a determined tealeaf will get through those with £50 angle grinder from B&Q, plus consider the damage that will be done on entry. It is the deterrent that stops them in their tracks that is what is needed and as tcm says you need to make your boat the least attractive option and then make it difficult for them to carry on, if they breach your first line of defence, the padlock on the hatch.

As a deterrent, I like the look of the Sound Bomb, at under a tenner plus a couple of pressure switches that is exactly what I was thinking of and at about a tenth the price I'd been expecting to pay.

Look at the Moody cabin / washboard lock. The only problem is that if you loose the key you wont be able to get in.
