Hi all,

Yet another question from me. I am getting a little 19ft fletcher that I will be using on the Thames around the Shepperton area.
The boat has no gas and a 3lt inboard, do I need a BSC and does it have to be registered to use on the Thames or are there only certain parts of the Thames it needs to be registered for?

Thanks in advance
Adam

Thanks guys, for the sake of a few hundred quid I would rather get it. And as for the BSC still waiting for a quote from the guy I emailed.

You do need a BSS Certificate if you are keeping it on the Thames unless it is exempt as it is "undergoing restoration".

However it also depends on how you intend to licence the boat. If it is kept on a trailer and is towed elsewhere (such as the sea/lakes etc.) then you could be licensing it on a visitor licence, in which case you "self declare" on the visitors licence application that it meets the standards of the BSS certification.

Thought the BSS had to be showed, when getting a visitor licence.
Self declare what a joke. Yes Mr Lockie I have a BSS. That's ok visiting boat enjoy the Thames.

Thank you for the replies. In all honesty im not sure how many times it will be used on the Thames between now and the 31st December for the £120 odd it may cost i think its easier than paying as a daily visitor.
Will have the BSS carried out shortly.
With regards to a comment above i think you still have to have the BSS but you sign to say you are insured.
"If you are coming onto the Thames as
a short-period visitor from another waterway, we will ask you to sign a declaration that you have a valid
policy."

14 Boat safety – construction and equipment
standards, continued
I confirm that I have read the Boat Safety Scheme Essential
Guide for non hire craft or 2002 Guide for Hire Craft.
I certify that it complies in every respect with the safety
standard requirements set out in that guide or the
Recreational Craft Directive (for launches first placed on
the market since 16 June 1996). I will not keep or use
this launch on the River Thames unless these conditions
are complied with.

I understand that the Environment Agency may require
me to provide information confirming compliance with
these conditions or to require my launch to be inspected.
