Why did my BSC cost me £150.00 when Halfords charge £40.00 for an MOT on my car?
They both took the same amount of time but of course my inspector had to do a 14 mile round trip to see my boat. But still the difference is substantial.
However I've now been trained to expect boat costs to be more than I expect so I will shut up.

To be fair its only every 4 years not every year, my inspector does a discount if you use him next time.
As you say he has to travel and probably only does a couple dozen inspections each year as a second job, who would want to do it for £40!

The chap who did my BSC gave me loads of useful advice and came back the following weekend to re test at no extra cost. Compared to a quick MOT I thought the price was very reasonable.

A friend of mine is a BSS examiner.
It certainly isn't a get rich quick scheme,he does It to keep his hand in,used to be an engineer and boat owner and does it for pin money/to get out from under his wife's feet:)

So when you average out the cost over 4 years....... the question is how on earth can my BSS inspector do it for so little, when it takes so much longer than an MOT. He has nothing like the throughput of a garage, it is only seasonal work at best and he has to travel to the boat..... even then he offers a free retest if it fails.... all for £37.50 a year!!!

I'm sorry, you are not having an hour or two of my time for £37.50 including travel costs!!!

My Shetland F4 has no gas so it was an easy survey. The chap still spent an hour with me and also had lots of useful advice.

I paid £150 but for 4 years I think it's good value :encouragement:
