Boat required for charter

Hi, I am looking for a motor boat to charter skippered (with crew if necessary) for passage from the UK to Gibraltar and back between Jan and the end of March. (Would be turnaround within one day once arrived)

We would put 4/5 persons on board one/two of whom would be YM Offshore CE/YM Instructors. Passage would be for training.

Open to ideas on vessel type but obviously needs to be suitably coded. Would need pictures/spec on craft, day rate, fuel burn estimate per mile/hour and any associated costs. I can discuss in more detail as required with those relevant/interested. Ideal cruising speed about 16+ knots. Vessel will have to be 12m+ although one vessel we have looked at is 27m so we are open minded. Can be a fully commercial craft - ie doesn't need to be pretty!

Your choice might be restricted by the fact many insurers will not cover a Biscay crossing before 1st April on a small boat. Or are you planning to hug the coast rather than go straight across to La Coruna?

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that.
How small is small, in this respect? Or does it also depend on the type of boat?

I dunno the details becuase I've never had to work through it. Last year when I wanted to get Match to SofF I was considering driving it there on own bottom and Pantaenius told me I'd need to refer to underwriters if I went before 1st April. I was planning to go right across from Brest to the NW tip of spain/Portugal. I didn't actually read the policy restrictions because I didn't need to make the trip, so I'm sorry if I'm being alarmist!

I think you'll have more luck and/or would be much cheaper to get different boats each way, and offer free delivery by qualified skipper from UK to Gib or vice versa, with fuel paid.

If I was the charterer, i'd want quite a fee to put 100 hrs+ on the engines, whereas if I wanted to move a boat to the med, and someone would do it for free and even cover the fuel, i'd jump at it.

You could also try contacting the boat manufacturers, and offer free delivery of a new craft to Gib.

I ran a Rodman 1250 out to Madeira a season back and was impressed by the overall performance of the boat in some pretty serious weather and seas (F7 up to 6m) on the starboard quarter.
2 x Volvo TAMD75s (if memorey serves me) gave 20 litres per hour at 8kts (1000rpm)combined and 100 litres per hour at 20knots (can't remember the rpm..) combined.
If you found one that needed moving you could do a lot worse.

Boat makes a good classroom, but is comfy enough to stay on for a few days at a time.

BUT, as has been said by others, it'll be a very steep charter rate for those hours being put on the engine... find out who needs a boat delivered (and if you need extra crew, I'd be up for it for the hours logged).

I think you will struggle with that as very little chance of getting insurance until April. I also think you will have a surprise on the fuel cost. As a 50 flybridge boat with 800 diesels will run you about 190lph at around 20 knts. And you will have a range of about 230 miles max and as others have said not sure most people will want you to put 100 hours on the boat in that short a time. It's gonna be a expensive course!!! And I would doubt that any one having a boat delivered would code it so you could do that trip

Talk to Pantaenius about insurance. I have just become skipper of a new Princess 85. They are more than happy for us to move it from UK to med anytime of year. No winter restriction on BoB. Only caveat is you must have suitable crew on board. Doh like I wouldn't..

Anyway we decided to wait until next year to move it as forecast was a bit drab and time constraints meant we couldn't hang around.

It will be interesting to see if you get someone to charter their boat for your trip? I would have thought the hours and potential punishment would mean you paying a high price even if you found someone.

Lots of larger boats heading for the med will already be coded, to try and get some charter income towards costs, but of course larger boat means bigger fuel bills for the OP.
