Having been very grateful for comments previously could I ask for comments and opinions on MG335 as potential new boat. It would be used for Cruising/Racing in that order. I have also considered Westerly Storm so would value comments. Thank you in anticipation!

I've always thought the MG looked a rather fine boat. As does the Westerly Storm for that matter, though the ones I've seen recently do look a little tatty. Probably means they are worth considering - a little elbow grease and all might be well.

Strange no-one has responded. There must be someone with experience of these who can comment.

The MG335 is a very good boat, most had self tacking jibs for short handed sailing but you need to have a good survey done before buying as most 335 have been raced hard and with great sucess, the accomodation is very good but you need to check the rigging connection points to the hull, some were prone to delamination
If you need further info PM me

In early Spring 2002 I crewed on an MG335 on a delivery from Ipswich to Whitehaven (770 miles)

The accommodation was good for a boat of this size, sensibly laid out, and she was very fast . . . made some remarkable passages down channel with a fortuitous following wind (in March!). I seem to remember Yarmouth to Falmouth in under 36 hours.

Dublin - Whitehaven we had a 12 hour beat into a F7 - the boat was definitely up for it, but slammed constantly unless allowed to drop well off the wind. She was surprisingly wet in these conditions for a modern AWB. She handled it OK, but it was hard on the crew. VMG in these conditions was excellent, and she always felt safe and easy on the helm.

Overall I would say she is an excellent cruiser/racer - I was prepared to find her uncomfortable as a cruiser, but this was not the case at all - although long windward passages in strong winds might be best avoided. (But aren't they always?!)

"Yarmouth to Falmouth in under 36 hours" - Fast?! Used to do Poole to Helford in 26 to 28hours in a Sadler 25 and we didn't consider that fast. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

we looked at them when considering our current boat (wanted a fast cruiser of around 33-34') with 3 cabins etc etc,

ended up narrowing down our short list to dehler 34 (which we bought) and scanmar 345 (hard to find and very variable in price and condition) - delighted with the dehler ,

seem to remember that the MG had strange kink in their saloon berths which given one of the crew has to use one put us off

Re: Speed

Poole to Helston is well over 150 miles in a straight line according to my atlas. If you don't consider that fast in a Sadler 25 then I suggest perhaps your memory is not quite what it used to be . . .

Considering that a 24 hour passage involves as much foul tide as fair I think a 6 knot plus average in a 25 foot boat is pretty fast - if not incredible . . .
