Thanks firstly to everyone who has offered help and advice, in particular to Mlines who happened to point me towards someone who seems to have identified the issue: http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3624066#post3624066

Seems to be electrical. I had in fact seen the symptom weeks ago but not sufficiently knowledgeable to connect the two....progress anyhow.

Mark Kirton who is local to us and recommended by the marina team is hoping to come over in the morning.

With some luck tomorrow I will be back up and running......Henley here we come!

Good luck,it is so blooming annoying when all you want to do is use the blimming boat but dread the thing conking out on you somewhere.
It would be nice if definate fault can be found and fixed as opposed the the thing just running OK again for no good reason.
As you know we sort of get involved in this on cars and in the past have frequently run new cable from one bit of the car to another, thus avoiding stripping out a wiring loom to discover hard to find break.

100%: I wont feel comfortable until all ambiguity has been removed.

With the river running as it is at the moment there's far too much risk of me ending up in a very unpleasant situation if I lose the motor again.....fingers crossed.

Yup..... Can't decide between a bikini or a Mankini

However: electrical fault found and fixed so she starts first time every time.

It was a needle in a Haystack- type issue.

Now a separate question of limited power when in gear and lots of sooty clouds when revved in neutral but Mr Savage has been updated and hopefully he will be able to deal with this in due course.

Should be in Henley on Saturday..... Flippers to hand in case!

CAC requires cleaning, or long shot seeing as unit is marinised automotive unit may still have some EGR components fitted and EGR valve stuck.

Google "10k Boost diesel engine cleaner". Having used it on several diesel road engines, it does what it says on the tin. ;)

Interesting, thanks Deefor.

Looking at some of the videos of people's results it looks like something I'd better try away from other boats or there'll be muck everywhere!
