I'm keen to upgrade the power systems on board - (additional battery/inverter/hi capacity alternator/galvanic isolator/combi charger-invertor) that type of thing. Can anyone recommend a guy who understands all this stuff and can help an ignoramus plan and subsequnetly install the system improvements? Portsmouth area based.

TIA

Think you need to do sme studying, buy some of the marine electric books or pay the going rate. What you are trying to do is fairly involved and will require a lot of knowledge. If you don't know anything and havn't done any electrics I don't suggest DIY

Agreed, that's why I'm asking for an expert to assist me.

No, presumably you want recommendations for a professional who'll give you impartial advice,and/or do it for you. Tricky. They all seem to have their own agenda, usually connected with making maximum bucks for minimum effort. Strange. Few years back I took a non-functioning anchor-winch motor to the 'electrics' guru based at Gosport Marina. Sucked teeth, said it would need new motor, could get one, cost 'yer etc. etc. So I took the back off the motor, cleaned the brushes, and it's worked a treat ever since.
Ask for a couple of testimonials.

PM sent, I have just had the electrics on my boat re-done.
A few supposed professionals came and realised due to the compexity of my requirements, ie more than connecting switches, batteries, light bulbs etc it was beyond them. The guy I used is very well known, highly recomended by others, although charges professional rates, not extortionate, and very competent in what you require. Unfortunatley he is very hard to schedule in, but not impossible as he is always busy.

If you have found a good electrical person, why do you send the details by PM? Why shouldn't you make his name public? We are quick to name and shame those who we are critical of. Why not give credit where its due?

Occasionally, I think that the PM is a mixed blessing on these forums!

Rant over. My feelings on PM's are well known.

John,

I'm not sure I agree with you on that one. It must surely be in the gift of the person whom is under discussion as to whether contact details are made available on a public forum. I have used the open forum and placed a recommendation in the past - never again - as the contractor who I highly rated (and continue to rate) had a load of grief from one the forumites hereabouts when he couldn't do the requested work within an unrealistic timetable ands also received grief about how expensive he is. Whether £25/hr is expensive or not is a personal perspective - I am willing to pay that for high quality expertise whereas others think it is extortionate. Compare £25/hr to what I pay for BMW service fitters - £70/hr!

So, rant not accepted.

I would imagine that any respectable good quality engineer would not mind being named. If he doesn't want the trade that becomes available after such an accolade, then he must already be very happy with his customer range. Perhaps it's worth asking him if he minds?

Yes I hear what you say but these days we all have so much "spam" flying around that we need to take care with our contact details. I certainly guard my email address carefully because I have no desire to receive 30 emails per day selling me viagra. Likewise my mobile phone number because I don't need 30 conservatories on the back of my house - et al............ad nauseum. Therefore I wouldn't want to subject others to such spam by my inconsiderate actions.

I most certainly agree with about email addresses and mobile phone numbers. I wasn't suggesting these be posted. I would imagine, though, that you wouldn't increase his spam count since his business will aready have publicly accessible contact details and will already be spam-filled.

IMHO it would benefit all concerned to name the good. Oh, and to shame the bad.

yes agreed; if it was Peters PLC and the suchlike you're correct. But I was recommending a one man band and his mobile number is on 24/7 and used for personal calls as well as business. So not fair, in my eyes, to broadcast on the web.

Hi Robert,

I wasn't suggesting putting his e-mail address and mobile number on the forum, but presumably a name and approximate location might enable a customer to find the person in question? Also, if the person is really good, why not pass his name on?

Might I humbly suggest that anyone who thinks that £25/hour for professional or trade services is expensive needs to have a think about their values and standards...
