i am new to the forums and don't seem to be able to properly search, so i hope some of you can help me to pinpoint the problem with my 1985 bayliner 1950 capri. my parents bought it new back in 1985, and have since purchased a chris craft and handed this boat down to me. the motor was rebuilt about four years ago. the problems are as follows: the motor (volvo penta 125) is difficult to start when warm, making it necessary to floor the throttle to get it running. once it is running, it must be feathered to keep the engine at idle speed, all the while blowing black smoke (running pretty rich, i believe.) once i get the motor started and up to cruising speed, if i push it above 2900-3000 rpm, it begins to bog down. this is particularly annoying when a skier is being towed behind the boat. it is also rather annoying to try to outrun a storm at 15-18 mph. i also noticed this weekend that the boat runs pretty warm, in the 220-230 degree range. is this normal, i know it would be bad in a car, but i am not very proficient with boats. to remedy these problems, i have pulled the solex 44 pai-5 and am searching high and low for a rebuild kit. (does anyone know a source for these?) i also plan to go back to the lake this weekend to replace the plugs, cap, points, wires, and rotor, as well as have the coil tested. if anyone has any input, it would be greatly appreciated, also if i have missed anything, please don't hesitate to let me know. thanks in advance for your help!

Sounds to me like a carburretor problem. Try cleaning it with carb cleaner and do the same to the flame arrestor which is on top of the carb. The latter can be cleaned with carb cleaner or petrol.

i have taken the carb mostly apart and cleaned it with carb and choke cleaner. where should the float be positioned for greatest benefit? also, as to the temperature issue, a gentleman on another board informed me to have a look at the strainer(s). what are your thoughts on this?

yes I would check strainer,if there is one, is the water pump the type that needs a regualr impellor change and also overheating could be the timing set wrong all in all a few things to check but nothing too costly.
