We are going to change our boat but our kids love its name. Should I rename the next boat we buy to be the same as our last? Or is it safer to buy a new boat so we can name her from the start!!!!

If you like it keep the name; plenty of people do but if it helps do a "ritual" to appease the "gods"; not sure of the details but I think it involves a few libations, a few suitable words with perhaps a swift glug over the bows - not sure of the order tho' .?.?.?
We changed the name of our boat when we bought it and so far nothing too bad related to that

I go along with the idear that shes new to me so I dont have any worrys about renameing. I make sure the spelling is bang on. mind you with boats and the double meenings, you can get get away with murder

I have kept the name of all of my boats. It took us a long time for us to come up with it, we both really like it and I think it is unique. My boat is now P1 registered, so it is easy to transfer the name. I also like the fact 'Whitelighter' will always be my boat, in whatever form she takes.

I think it depends on the name of the boat and if you can live with it.

I bought a boat called, 'Passing Wind' and hated it so changed it to, 'Ocean Drive'.

The next was called, 'Rachels Revnge' and changed it to, 'Raz Ma Taz'.

The latest was called, 'Panache' and I think it's fine.

There's no point in having a name that you cant stand looking at, hearing or repeating over the VHF.

Always liked the name, "Pistol Knight" for the VHF reason. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The choice of new or second-hand ("pre-used" just isn't right is it?) is going to be about more than whether you get to name a boat from new.

We did the naming ceremony on our boat - and the important thing is to do it in daylight with friends, lots of photos and lots of champagne (not cheap Cava otherwise the gods won't like it and take revenge), and invocation of all the wind, sea and any other gods that you think might take an interest.

Our daughter did the Christian prayer bit and a friend (has to be female) did the ancient wind gods and the "I name this yacht ..." bits. Champagne over the bow, champagne in the water for Neptune (don't be mean) and then champagne for those present.

Make a big deal of it cos it is a big deal to name a boat - we are all very lucky to be in this position.

We have changed the name of every boat we have owned! It ain't done us no harm (yet!)

I think, wasn't one of Day Mellons boats renamed? Was'nt Kingfisher something else in a past life? She did alright with it.

The 'bad luck' of boat renaming goes back to the days when the name was carved in the keel, to rename a boat to old name had to be cut off, so subsequent renaming weakened the keel, with sometimes disastarous results.

So it OK on an AWB but risky on a MAB!

Just a minute while I check...

.. with the great Architect of the Universe.

Yup, you can call it the same as the last one if you want, whether you buy new and therefore unnamed, or used and already called something else.

He did point out that if your existing boat is part I registered and called for instance 'CostaLot', you will have to call it 'CostaLot II' if you intend to register that too (and you will have the sole right to that and all subsequent numerical suffixes to 'CostaLot').

Not that I'm suggesting you have a boat called 'CostaLot', or that your kids would love the name, it was just the first naff boat name that sprang to mind.

As for a renaming ceremony for an existing boat, I am told it is important to use chemical stripper if the old name is painted on, or gentle heat from a hot air gun to remove stickers - before applying the new name.

Orange showed her disdain of her apparent new name Kingfisher2 by losing her mast in the southern Ocean, later in another fit she caused massive damage to herself by hitting an underwater object..

hardly doing alright, bad luck boat, IMO

I like the name "Cormorant of Falmouth"

Shag for short!

[/ QUOTE ] There is a big difference between a shag and a cormorant. Everybody can remember a shag but who can remember a cormorant!
