First post, still very much a wannabe.
Is there a web site with a definative listing of boat names ? Reading the requirements for registration (U.K.) it seems to me that any name has to be unique. Is this true ?

Only for part I registration, not part III (SSR). If you don't part I register, you can call it anything you like, even if other boats have the same name. Best thing is to make a list of names you like, 5 or 10, then before you fill the form in, give then a call and ask them if any are taken.

There are wrinkles to this, which you can find by doing a search here on the forums, and have been discussed many times

If you do require a totally unique name the other way to look at is to translate a common as muck name like Charisma into another language (in my case gaelic) which produces Seun which I when checking on http://www.itu.int/cgi-bin/htsh/mars/ship_search.sh is totally unique.... this isn't proof that there isn't another Seun but it is a pretty good indicator... compare a search on ships name Charisma with a search on ships name Seun!

Added bonus is I hated Charisma and really like Seun!

Oh and Seun is much quicker to spell phonetically as well!

If you into Gaelic can you comment on the two translations I have been given for my boat's name.

Ceum Ur is, I am told, either Next Step or Step New. Whichever it is they are both appropriate.

thanks, Mike
