How do peaple name their boats?

Our first boat was called Tambelaine, after a book that was writen by a member of the family.
Now Brigadoon, as the film was loved by the whole family. 3 boats in total have been called brigadoon prefixed with either baby or big depending on size.

Do you keep the same name when you change boats or choose a new name.?

Did looks come into it.?

I always ask why/ how the boats name was chosen.

Anyone got some good storys as to why they where named what they are named?.

When Englander was being built, the original owner/builder applied for prt one registration, he applied for "Englishman" and had that name carved into the hull, both sides and on the transom, in old english script!! by hand! belongs to a tug, still afloat, still using the name (registered elsewhere now) So they offered him his second choice, Englander. You can still see, when the paints off, where they cut out the last part of the name, put new teak in and carved Englander. Lots of people (especially in majorca) come up to me and speak german, thinking I`m german, because of the name and the script!! Yes I know! But Englander is german for an englishman/woman.
If I ever sold her, the name would stay with her, she deserves it I dont, being a Scot!
Not what you really wanted I know, but there it is!

I wanted something that sounded nautical and at the same time would only need to say once over VHF for people to understand it, so "Sea Breeze" came about.

D'ya know, I have always wanted to know where the name "Englander" came from and equally I have always wanted to know about what type of boat she is. I have this mental picture of a boat that you live aboard, and travel about in, in sunny climes - a sizeable craft of about 20 tonnes or so. Is that a picture of her on your biog? Do you have a bigger picture, I genuinely would like to know more about her. How many births, what dimensions, I believe she is a motor sailor?

I bet both Englander and yourself have a few tales to tell - and damn good ones at that!

Mine is "Coney Island" and my previous boat had the same name, fortunately for me the new owner of my old boat did not want the name. Coney Island is a particular favourite track from a particular favourite artist - Van Morrison, and it always conjures up happy times in North Wales and the Irish Sea.

The name on my boat is done in handwriting script and the "I" of Island is made into a palm tree with yellow sun behind it.

So there you have it - your post is what I wanted to know! Cheers and have a good weekend.
