I'm just about to get the graphics done for Busby and was wondering about the homeport name.

What does the mighty forum say about including the country as well as homeport?

Would you, for example, put 'UK' or maybe even 'England', or not bother?

The boat will not be in the UK in the forseeable future, and anyway, I always think 'UK' sounds naff. ewww kay ack!

Here in the States they often include the state, e.g. New York NY. I've not seen USA yet.

hmm, therein lies another head scratcher at the moment Tom- there's a substantial ladder that clips up from the swim platform that will obscure the name a bit if i centre it - might have to put it to one side or even at the side, port and starboard quarter.

thats where it is at the moment and i'd rather have it centred on the transom ideally

you can see the boat here

One of my pet peeves when we were cruising were the boats with lots of "stuff" on their stern (swim ladder, wind vane, dinghy, life raft, etc.) that obscured the name and/or hailing port of their boat. Or the name was so small nobody could figure it out unless they were just about to collide.

Why would you take the time to think of a meaningful name for your boat and then hide it?

Big letters, and if your stern is cluttered, put the name elsewhere - as on the sides of the hull. For example, like this:

The port name shows the port of registry...

There's another problem here. Boats registered on the SSR do not have a port of registry yet every single form you have to fill in when cruising asks for one.

The answer? Just decide what you would like to use and stick to it. I always say London and no-one has ever queried that. Generally speaking, officials just like their forms filled in - they don't care what you put!

Here, in The Bahamas, I see many large visiting private yachts, motor vessels with something like the following on their sterns -
Name of Vessel
Port of registry e.g. Georgetown, followed by e.g.
C.I. (Cayman Isles). Just the C.I. is shown...

So ya pays ya money and takes ya choice...
