Hi, just did a quick search for this but haven't found an exact answer so hope you don't mind if this has been repeated.

My boat, which I bought in July this year is called "Mischievous" which is an OK name, but means nothing to me so I'm thinking of changing it to something else. Hopefully, it'll make the boat more "mine" if you see what I mean.

So I understand it's supposed to be unlucky unless you follow certain protocols, which is fine - any excuse for cracking open some bubbly and I'm used to throwing money away now I'm a boat owner.

But is there anything I need to consider about paperwork and affecting resale? It's not a huge boat (Monterey 250) which I bought cash, so no mortgage etc. All the paperwork is in the current name (bill of sale, plus the brokers change of owners paperwork). Is it odd to change a boats name and will it cause a problem when I go to sell it?

What have other people done to make the change from one name to another? I guess I can change my VHF details on OFCOM's web site, as with the CG66 that I registered when I bought the boat.

Any other thing I need to be aware of?

Thanks

Unless it is registered on Part 1 there are no restrictions on the name - nor indeed any requirement to have a name at all!. Clearly you will have to change the name on anything that currently uses the name.

people change boat names all the time its not a problem - good excuse for some bubbly to appease Neptune
is the boat listed on either the part 1 or small ships register? If so dig out your registration document and go online for the relevant forms for changing.
Somewhere on the boat will be a hull number which will match with your purchase documentation - thats the important bit tying it all together so you can demonstrate ownership in future

If its not registered I think you can do whatever you like - obviously update radio license etc

That's great it's so easy. I can do the CG66 (can't upload a photo whatever I try!) online and the VHF licence so that's all good.

Now the hardest part is choosing the name...........a few options:

1) Fiddlers Green - A mystical paradise in "The Dreaming" that sailors dream of reaching, from The Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman.
2) Perdita - The name of the Sky Ship that Captain Shakespeare flies in Stardust (the novel) by Neil Gaiman
3) Caspertine - The name of the same Sky Ship but from the movie this time.

As you can tell, I'm a big Neil Gaiman fan. I've been umming and aaahing over this for weeks now!
