Hi knowledgable ones,

I am looking for a mooring or shore berth with access to a slip in the Harwich area. I have a eighteen foot mini sailing cruiser and I will need somewhere to keep it.

All advice and information gratefully received.

But expensive I am told!

I was told that too, before i moved there. They are probably slightly cheaper than most other marina's in the area and are the closest to the sea. The marina is behind a lock, so nicely sheltered. The lock actually turns out to be less of a pain than you'd think, it does keep returns at peak times nicely organised, rather than a free-for-all. Have a word with them and see what they'll charge, they do something called a "Q" berth for boats under 7m, but i think they are shallowish draft. The staff are all extremely helpful, phone them and ask to speak to John or Miriam, you never know.

Orwell Yacht Club have a decent looking slipway and probably space ashore if their members hurry up and launch their boats.

You could try the Stour Sailing Club based at Manningtree, they have swing moorings and are about £150 a year. Much easier than launch/recovery all the time. It is tidally restricted but i reckon on getting between 3 and 4 hours each tide.

For that sized craft acces to the sea is less important I reckon than a good cruising ground. Tidemill at Woodbridge is much cheaper than Shotley, has 3 hours access for us each side of HW and gives you the whole 9 miles of the Deben to play in. But there is a waiting list. Try Eversons and Robertsons as they do swinging moorings even cheaper.

If you're happy with a swinging mooring, Pin Mill might be another option, you need to speak to Gus or Sarah at Harry Kings boat yard. Accessible at all but low water springs, but it can get a bit of a walk if the tide is almost out. I did wonder whether it might be possible to join RHYC and keep a tender there, in which case access would be 24/7
