Boat life show

When you say “many have not attended” they had no choice. The .de government closed the exhibition centre down for a month.

Princess put on a lovely boutique show in Plymouth which served a number of purposes but ultimately they would rather have been at Boot. Not convinced they saved much money when all was said & done.

I’m well aware it was shut down like so many others.

All I’m saying is that in my personal opinion it will take a good few years to return to its pre covid look and feel if it ever does.

The way you present and market new (and pre owned) boats has changed as a result of covid. You have seen this with your cars surely?

Granted nothing beats crawling over various models as a punter but the BMYS has proved you don’t need to drop millions in order to entice your clients to do so.

The boat show landscape has changed and will take some years to recover if it ever does.

Lack of inventory will start to hit harder too.

That said, I for one look forward to a hot sausage and beer in the freezing cold next Jan !!

I agree....

Little boats: NEC (<35ft)
Big boats: BMYS (>35ft) - avoids the huge transportation stand set-up of a formal show

To see everything, go to BOOT - no need for Excel.

We went to boot in 2020 before the world had to press pause. It is a lovely show and huge.we also stayed in a strange hotel which had the best Chinese buffet style restaurant I have ever been to and I have been to a few (says old fat bloke :))

The British MY show is brilliant but it only serves a small UK niche. It costs pennies to exhibit but will never replace Boot D which serves a massive international audience.

I’ll put fifty quid down with you that Boot D 2023 is back with a bang.

Agree with this completely. When Dusseldorf re-ignites, what manufacturer is going to be prepared to be The One That Wasn't There? They will all be back because none of them will want to be the one that isn't.

But a number of the large manufacturers pulled out BEFORE it was shut down.

I personally think Cannes will be THE European show from now on, I just cannot see how manufacturers can justify the sheer expense of going back to a hall event regardless of the need to launch product.

I was using BMYS as an example of how you can stage a small event successfully, I was not suggesting it was THE answer, you can, of course, replicate this in your biggest markets with many doing that already.

anyhow Henry can take off the £50 from the deposit I may give him one day for a car ;)

People were pulling out because of travel restrictions before the .de government made their ruling. Companies were having to commit to large sums of exhibition costs not knowing if the show would I’ll waive the £50 you owe me if you do buy something….. ?

Boot is truly international and I know many of the Asian visitors were effectively unable to attend.

Even European exhibitors and visitors potentially faced isolation periods.

Free travel will ensure a normal show.

But all were exhibitors who had agreed to go, but pulled out because they sensed (quite correctly) that it was likely to not go ahead. It's a hugely expensive show to exhibit at.

They have been justifying the expense for the last couple of decades, why would they suddenly stop now?

I’m not saying they won’t go full stop, I’m saying it won’t be back to pre covid levels of investment.

There will always be place for shows but not as many and not as big.

COVID / lockdowns have proved there are ways to sell boats outside of the traditional methods which include large scale indoor events.

It’s difficult to justify the same level of spend when the industry is having a record year.

It’s not just events, it’s advertising too. It’s still happening but in different ways.

I love nothing more to visit (when I’m not working then ) boat shows and other events but from what I have experienced recently I just cannot see it returning to the big event it once was.

There are also benefits too.

The lack of paper (brochures etc) at shows is now really having an impact now QR codes are back (for the fourth time !?) as a result of covid.

Let’s see.

Henry, line up that Macan minus 50 quid ;)
