We are hope to take a trip to alpine france and will probably stay on one of the big lakes there. Looking into hiring a small boat on a one or two days as part of the fun (and to get our boat fix) there appears to be two options: The boat is the same (usually a 15/18ftr) but with different size engine? Without a "licence" you get a small 6hp engine, but with one you can get a 40/50hp... my question is what do they consider a licence? are any of the UK quals ie PBII accepted?

Yes, you need an ICC. See the RYA site for both what is needed in the way of documentation in France and what you need to get an ICC.

I always take a sports boat out in France or Spain and my RYA ICC is instantly accepted (along with a fair wedge of a deposit). I'm led to believe it is ok any where in the world except for the US, could any one confirm this?
Cheers Martyn
