contemplating a two hour drive to carrickfergus for the irish boat jumble tomorrow, are they worth going to,what would be on show or for sale does there be genuine chandleries at them any thoughts??

Only been to our local one just outside Norwich, but have found that it is generally a nautical car boot sale and market combined. Lots of rubbish for sale and business type stalls selling stuff for much the same price it is in the chandlery.

We go just for a wander round and the hope of a bargain (yet to appear)!

Wherabouts in Carrick is it? Near the marina?

You really do need to know what price you expect to pay elsewhere before going to a jumble. Many dealers are selling at or near normal price - but without the normal protection if things go wrong. Increasingly jumbles are trade markets with dwindling supplies of real 2nd hand bargains.

On the other hand if you are loking for something obscure, then they can be quite useful

But there are bargains to be had: you just need to be able to tell the good from the bad....

Nobody can say if you will find them at Beaulieu, but it's the biggest Boat Jumble in the country. If you don't find them there, you won't find them at any Jumble.

Ps I'm not sure exactly what you are after but have you tried these people?

Jumbles are pot luck. If you find just what you were looking for, then it was great, if you don't then it was rubbish. I have been to jumbles and bought loads of really good stuff at bargain prices while others have been to the same jumble and not found a thing they were looking for. If you are boating on a budget you need to go to every Jumble you can find. When I was building my current boat over a four year period I went to every Bealieu and each time came back with a van load of treasure. Even went to a tiny jumble in docklands, had about twenty stalls. As we walked in I saw the PRM box I needed on the floor next to a stall. Bought it for £100 and it lasted until I changed the engine and beyond, including a round Britain trip. Price of the new box at that time was about £800. If it wasn't for jumbles I wouldn't have been able to build a 12 metre cruiser for £16,000!
