\"Boat Jumble season begins\" - PBO headline

Reminds me of the words of that old song:

".........first you lose your anchor chain, then you buy it back again...........

well, Plod has benn much in evidence last couple of years both at Southend and North Weald, checking serials and they were carrying lists.

There are lots of new vendors with clearance bargains too, and a lot of clubs have stands, like my own Roach Sailing Association (but not sadly, this year)

Hampshire Police Marine unit attend every Boat jumble in their county and check ALL outboards and a lot of electrical items, never find anything of note, A lot of exaggeration about how much is actualy stolen from boats, look at the amount of stuff on the stolen forum here, and a lot of unfounded suspicion about boat jumbles.

Sorry, but with the general concensus on these fora about "Plod" seeming to be highly negative, you will have to explain whether you feel their presence at Boat Jumbles is a positive thing or whether you believe that they are dealing in stolen property and generally thieving outboards and / or sailing paraphernalia /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Boat jumbles were a major source of disposal of stolen goods at one time; it wasa standing joke, with a sting in the tail because it was often true, that the Hamble was stripped of removable gear each spring, but owners could buy it all back cheap at the Beaulieu Jumble after claiming on their insurance!

More recently marine Police on the South coast would be on the watch before major east Coast events, and vice versa. They reckoned most Solent thefts went up the M25 to the East Coast events and back down for the Solent events.

Boat Jumbles have changed a great deal in recent years as a result: the chances of being sold 'hot' items has virtually gone, and the vast majority of stalls are dealers selling off old, or end of line stock.

The 'rip off' nowadays is dealers selling 'discounted' items at inflated 'jumble' prices which may be above what you would pay the big discount chandleries.

Add to that some trade stalls that do not display clearly who they are or where they are from, you have no idea who you are dealing with, so your consumer rights if the goods are faulty go straight out the window.

Ebay is a generally safer bet nowadays because you do have comeback for goods 'not as described' - though Ebay too has its share of scammers....

On the other hand, Boat Jumbles do still come up with rare, obsolete or specialist items that may be virtually unobtainable elsewhere.

Stopped at a hotel in Hampshire a few years ago and a sign in the car park clearly stated ' Police Patrol This Car Park ___ Please Ensure All Valuables Are Placed Out Of Site '
Never did work that one out

old Harry seem rather well informed about the goings on of the police and there trips up the east coast, But I agree with him thet these days Boat Jumble are no longer the place for a bargain unless its something obscure or you catch the true boater who happens to be emptying their garage. Dont forget www.Stolenboats.org.uk which is all outboards boats dingies etc, this is added to by all major insurance companies and police. You can check items here before you buy, no gaurantee but it helps.
