Hello All,

I was wondering whether anyone can recommend a boat alarm system.

Why am I interested...................well thanks to a gang that raided the hardstandings at Holyhead Marina over the weekend I'm now one of the victims, loads of boats were targeted from what I understand, thankfully I did take the most expensive items off home for the winter but still quite a lot was stolen.

I would prefer self install, imagine it would need to include external strobe, audible and possibly SMS to alert someone of it's activation. It would need to run from 12V DC and clearly have a low current drain on the batteries.

I was thinking of a contact alarm on the main cockpit locker and the companion way hatch cover. Are there advantages / disadvantages of PIR vs magnetic contacts? Do you have any tips on the installation, location of device etc to prevent it being hit by a big crow bar on entry and silenced?

I've done the usual google searches and forum seaches but would like to hear from users who can recommend products or offer specific advice.

How do those with boats abroard on the hard for the winter protect your boat and contents, clearly taking items off when flying home isn't really going to be that practical?

Thanks in advance,

Graham

Mine is made by "ALTAI" but I couldn't find it via Google.
Google caravan alarms.
Also fit a shockguard and a pressure mat, as that will set off the alarm before they start attacking the door.

Interesting idea about the pressure mat, I could certainly install that for winter storage as there is a tarpauline that covers the cockpit then and it wouldn't be obvious, thanks

Just string a load of fish hooks criss crossing the cabin Interior .With a bit of luck the scrote may still be caught up on your next visit .

Interesting question. My new boat has a Unicom system installed. This includes a motion detector in the main cabin and a control unit in a cockpit locker that has a big shiny key that is currently set to off.

I dare not touch it, but a little research suggests it somehow sends a text message if activated. Obviously it won't be my phone that is texted.

Just one of many confusing systems on this boat that I have not even tried to understand yet.

Last time I looked it was possible to set up an app on an android phone to act as a visual baby monitor.
It had the camera on constantly and if there were sudden changes in the image or sound it would start taking pictures that can be uploaded to dropbox automatically.

If I recall correctly it could aslo send a text if that was triggered.

If all of that still works it could be a cheap and easy solution, if the bateries of the boat can keep the phone charged.

Hi Graham,

Sorry to hear about the thievery.

No damage done I hope.

Cheers,
Nigel

Have a look at these, I recently installed the Minder alarm and very happy with it, takes MMS pictures, controlled by SMS text, has two wireless door contacts (text alert) and an alert if the 240volt mains fails. Doesn't tick all the boxes, but a start.....

Prices vary! £180 to £400, I got mine from thinkcctvsystems.

Minder and Alert Pal are the same product.

Hi Graham, That sucks, really sorry for you.

They are now suggesting up to 15 boats were broken into over a 10 day period.

Is it worth looking at a bulk purchase of one of these systems? Perhaps an e-mail to the berth holders association and the sailing club? Maybe Geoff or the Chandlery could help as a gesture of goodwill?
