I am about to take out a new insurance policy for my motor cruiser. The best quote, including excess, I have received is from Haven Knox. Does anyone have any experience of using Haven Knox? Thanks.
I used them for many years.
On a trip back from Holland, after purchasing a 10 year old Broom, I had cause to shear all the bolts in the flexible coupling on one shaft. No one was able to say exactly why but the boat was surveyed 2 months earlier, by my surveyor, who confirmed the couplings were fine.
Damage amounted to around £2k (new shaft, coupling, labour, lifts, etc).
Haven Knox Johnston were kept informed at all times, from Nieuwpoort, where it all happened.
After sending their assessor to check the boat, once returned to Southampton, they declined to make any payment.
I had never previously made a claim and had been with them for 10+ years.
I immediately changed insurers to St Margarets.
At the end of last year I had cause to make a claim, albeit more straightforward, which was dealt with efficiently, courteously and speedily.
I shall never use Haven again, whatever their premiums might be.
I've used Michael Stimpson/ Mardon Insurance they were very good years ago when we knocked (very seriously) the wheelhouse off, after hitting a bridge. The boat had to be craned out, transported back to the builder miles away, and back again, after the wheelhouse had been rebuilt. They didn't quibble at all.
I have found them to be very efficient whenever I have had cause to contact them, although I have never had to make a claim /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
When I was on Windermere I had HKJ and my boat was damaged in a stormwhen the finger pontoon collapsed and damaged the gell coat. As I changed Marina it took me nearly a year to get the work done (£1500).
paid up without any fuss at all.
However when we moved to Majorca we switched to Bishop Skinner as the premium was significantly lower and they were recommended in a magazine comparison.
I have my cover with Craftinsure.com. Never had a claim so I can’t comment on their policy of settling claims but were very competitive on price and you pay monthly.
Their policy however does not cover "Home Port" Insurance, so if your'e a victim of crime or damage either at home port or away, from an unknown source you will be liable to pay the excess charge,@ £150.00 a time, it's not such a good policy when this is taken into account, and of course all this is in the vv small print bit!!! So I will shopping around this year for a new Insurer
Ever since the invention of the steam engine. Insureres would not insure against mechanical damage or damage caused by it. So with a power boat there is little left to be insured about. Less hitting bridge of course. Maybe why insurance is so cheap. There is little chance of ever paying out!
Have read the rules again and can find no mention of the exclusion you mention. Can you point out the relevant bit? The only thing i can find with regard to this is that it states
"We will pay for physical loss of/or damage to ( Boat Name) directly caused by malicious acts of third parties"
But did get a couple of other quotes for comparison via brokers.Without exception all considerably more expensive and one excluded single handed boating, which would def keep me uninsured for most of the time.Had also requested to pay first 300 quid of any claim to keep premium to a minimum.
Try Navigators and General. I've been with them for many years (and a few boats) and found them reasonable. While I personally have never claimed, I do know others who have claimed and each one paid out promptly. Ignore their first quote - negotiate a bit!
