Hi folk looking to insure my boat & hoping somebody can point me in direction of the best/cheapest place to go????

Most of the marine insurance companies have their supporters or sometimes otherwise on this forum. I prefer Navigators & General for my boat but you may find other companies more suitable. Best way is to obtain a few quotes and keep trying the search facility as there has been threads on this in the past. Don't forget that if your boat is in a marina / yard it is normally a requirement that the boat is suitably insured.

I would recommend using a good local broker to do this for you. There are so many variables it would be difficult to answer your question. If you tell the forum where you are (and the boat) you may get some recommendations. I use Curtis marine in Plymouth and found them to be excellent.

A lot depends on your boat & finances.

Some insurers insist on surveys every so often for cruisers, which is expensive especially when considering lifts out on top of the hefty surveyors' fee.

Some insurers are less hot on this with boats worth less than £10k.

Also some won't cover a boat in the water over the winter months unless she's in a marina.

I'm with Haven - St Margarets, perfectly happy with them; I'd thought they were on the dear side but when shopping around last year I found I'm getting a good deal...

It all depends on what you are looking for in an insurance company. Most people I am sure will agree that it can be false economy to go for the cheapest. Insurance is all about you feeling confident that if you do have a claim, that you will get a swift pay out.
We are with Pantaenius and are delighted.

Google Yacht Insurance and you will get plenty of choice. Many do on line quotes so you can get ballpark figures very quickly. There is not much to choose among the major ones - all their policies are similar although you will, when you get the detailed policies (usually available electronically) find minor differences which may be important to you. You will also find differences in attitude to surveys if you are going all risks. If you don't want to do the legwork then go to a broker, but think you will find it just as easy to do it yourself and you will get to know the differences.
