... GJW!

They really come through when you need them.

Filed claim three weeks ago - damage below the waterline to keel, hull and rudder. Plus bent prop shaft and damage to the engine gearbox.
Filed with yard quote and as many pictures as I thought would be useful.

Letter in the post today:

Having examined the claim the underwriters are pleased to advise that this loss is recoverable in the terms of the policy and have no objections to you authorising repairers to proceed with the work.

Once the final invoice is to hand we will make arrangements for settlement net of your policy excess.

Result!
And to think that I only went with them because they were cheap.

Guapa,

I had read about your trials online... glad to hear you will be covered. I found GJW very helpful too after Green Gini was burned in a yard fire (fire in adjacent boat). As I commented in my scuttlebutt "Countess - Cautions success in conwy" story, at first they were reluctant to re-insure me for my next boat, but once I pointed out that the fire did not originate in my vessel they were happy to reinsure me. I'd say they are conscientious and careful without being inflexible or unreasonable. We need more businesses like them in the UK.

And very competitive too!

Cheers

It's a sad reflection on the insurance industry when you're surprised that the insurance company agrees to pay for what they are contracted to pay for. Still, I'm glad its worked out and hopefully you will be afloat soon.

So far I'm also happy customer of GJW only on price though as i've not had to make a claim.
Interesting to read that if a fire starts in a boat next to yours that you have to claim off your own insurance, should the insurance company covering the boat where the fire started not be liable? I pressume you would lose you No claims bonus as well?

Phew - good result.

Saw Guapa at Fox's when we were on holiday spending money there (took a couple of pics too) but hadn't read the full story at the time. Wondered why she was there, the last post I'd seen was the new decks. Have now caught up and pleased they've come through and you can get her sorted out.

About time you had a bit of a result Will. Pleased for you.

I think the arguement about the fire is that it's an accident - you can't 'blame' the other person for an accident, so you can't claim off their insurance. If you can show negligence then that's a different story, but if the police & fire brigade don't show anything up you are unlikely to achieve anything on your own.

When I sought new insurance for the newer new tub (having reminded them that the fire for the older new tub was started elsewhere) they agreed to let me keep the no claims discount - though the premium did go up. I guess you are viewed as a higher risk if you have had a claim.

They were very understanding all round. When I bought the first new tub & I approached them for insurance they asked about my boat owning history. The boat I have been sailing for the last 15 years is shared ownership between my Mum & myself, but the insurance (with GJW for the past few years too) was always in her name (tho I paid my whack). Even though the I was not the named holder they accepted I had been paying insurance & a boat owner, so they they gave me the no claims discount - which I thought was very good of them as they could easily have refused that offer. Hope they don't read this & change their mind!!!

All round I think they are very professional, listen to your enquiries, understand what you are talking about, and are a pleasure to do business with. Easy 10/10 from my experience.

Cheers
