Boat insurance costs/recommendations

Hi-

I've always had Basic Boat Insurance Company third party 2/3 million cover, costs about £70 from memory.

The 'new' boat is more expensive, about the price of a good second hand family car so I think I need more cover, eg for damage, theft.

Suggestions of companies to try, pitfalls to avoid, best ways of describing the boat and location, need/none-need of surveys, etc.

The boat is 1981 ish, a GRP sailing yacht.

Pretty well worn path. Not a lot to choose from the main players such as GJW, Bluefin, Admiral etc as they all offer essentially the same policy and in my experience (have just got quotes from about 6 providers) very little difference in price. Where there are differences is in things like single handed cover and supplements for wider cruising grounds. Most will require a recent survey if you want the hull and machinery insured - not unreasonable because as you will see from the quotes this is where the risk is. Premiums rise as you ask for more insured value.

Send exactly the same information to a range of companies - in most cases you can do this on line. You should get quotes almost by return and links to policies so that you can make your comparison aand choice. Google Yacht Insurance and you will get plenty of potential providers.

I've used Bishop Skinner Marine for the last few years - only went up by £1.80 when I renewed last November. 1979 yacht, total value 28k, premium of £214.45 but I do have all the extra's etc. Never claimed though.

Cheap insurance can be expensive. No insurance company is any good until they prove themselves dealing with a a claim, with my own experience and that of others I know, I can highly recommend GJW.

With out hijacking this thread to much. Do GJW offer a singlehanded policy? I have read my policy and it says I'm not covered. If I ring them will they ask for an extra fee for a singlehanded policy?

Can't speak for GJW but I added singlehanded with Bishop Skinner - no extra charge, but need an autopilot fitted and daylight hours only. Did have a quote from another company (can't remember which) that had unlimited singlehanded. Expect I could get that with BS if I asked.

i got s/h cover with Mercia marine on a "quadrant" policy, and I have had well settled claims in my 20yrs, mostly breakins on the mooring, more recently mast damage that wass my own fault.
I have been with GJW and left when they introduced their silly "no towing/bein towed" and no singlehanding rules.

They may say daylight s/h is Ok on the phone, but its not in the policy where it needs to be.

Still every year they try to sell me another policy, but the terms are still stupid.

Inaccurate - they rise to a certain point and then drop in % terms.

The break-points appear to be £50k and £250K in most insures cases

They will, with much arm-twisting, but for a maximum of 24 hours.

Interesting need to do some are twisting when I asked, ten years ago it was day light only...

Also worth paying real attention to terms of policy... I was somewhat concerned by some of the terms from some of the major insurers, including not covering damage from water ingress!!!!

I ended up insuring with new boys, Y insurance, started by ex MD of Pantanius UK... Great policy, and especially liked the fact that they run their own claim management team rather than relying on the (potentially seriously biased) insurers own team. Also, were a pleasure to deal with

surveys usually required every 7 years or so for reputable ins companies, Bay Marine is an excellent company and will give you exactly what you ask for, you tell them what you want and they give you the price.

Don't sign up online....big mistake, when you first insure have a current survey it really helps.
