I have recently ordered a new Mariah 250. The delivery date is in a few weeks. Is there much to choose between the different insurance companies, and is there anything in particular that should be looked out for? The boat will be kept in the water on the Ssouth coast.

Try st magarets premier policy, they are resonable and it has benifits. I ve been with them for years and no one has beaten them yet

Join the Oxford Ditch Cruising Club, they own their own Brokerage and give almost everything back to members insuring via them. The £25 a year membership can save you a lot more and you have the benefits of club membership.

I was with GJW for years- no complaints- till this year. On looking around at around half a dozen different companies, I found St Margarets- for me- by far the best value. They were cheaper, zero excess, including tender up to £1000, and here is the best, a much bigger crusing range, extending down as far as 35 degrees North (mid Mediteranean). So I changed. It does pay to shop around.

HAVING JUST CHANGED TO A DIFFERENT TYPE OF BOATING OUR INSURANCE COMPANY NEEDED CHANGING. lOOKED AT BOTH sT MARGARETS AND GJW AND FOUND GJW £100 LESS FOR SAME COVER,IN FACT BETTER COVER AND NO DIFFERENCES IN EXCESS. aLSO COULD PAY FOR GJW BY DIRECT DEBIT SO HELPING TO SPREAD THE COST. wE NOW HAVE A BOAT ON A TRAILER AT HOME AND LAUNCH AND RECOVER EACH WEEKEND,WITH BOTH ST MARGARETS AND GJW WE HAD TO HAVE 2 TRAILER LOCKS WHEN BOTH THE BOAT WAS ON THE TRAILER STORED AT HOME AND WHEN THE TRAILER WAS LEFT AFTER BOAT LAUNCHING, BUT WITH ST MARGATETS IT ALSO HAD TO BE KEPT IN A LOCKED COMPOUND WHICH ISN'T ALWAYS PRACTICAL AT SAY THE SEASIDE OR IN FACT AT HOME WHERE THERE ARE NO LOCKED GATES AT THE END OF THE DRIVEWAY TO KEEP THE BOAT BEHIND. HOPE THIS IS USEFUL,ALTHOUGH COULD BE A DIFFERENT STORY IF WE HAVE TO CLAIM !!!! ALSO FOOTNOTE WITH GJW WHEN I SPOKE TO THEM ANY PLACE WE MAY CONSIDER TAKING THE BOAT THAT WE MAY THINK IS NOT COVERED ON THE ENDORSEMENTS AS LONG AS WE RING AND LET THEM KNOW A NOTE WILL BE PUT ON OUR FILE AND WE ARE COVERED.

Strongly recommend GJW. Have used them for 15 years. They may not be cheapest (I have not checked this, but as my premiums total only a few hundred quid any price differences cannot be significant) but thy're cetainly not expensive or generally out of line. But most important their reasonableness in claims handling (= willingness to pay out rather than nitpicking) is superb. Also their admin and turnaround on policy renewals, amendments etc is great
