TSDY Jorvic is 42' and was built by James McGruer in 1950, build number 557 and (as far as I am aware) spent most of her life around the north east of England and Scotland. External refurbishment is nearing completion and I'm just about to start refurbishing the interior & engines over the winter. Jorvic is now on the east coast & I'd love to learn more about her history if anybody remembers her.

I really need help identifying the two Thornycroft engines. When I purchased the boat I was told they were 42hp but as each one has had custom exhaust manifold and a non standard Bowman heat exchanger fitted, with this there difficult to identify from workshop diagrams. The engines were fitted new in 1966 but the ID plate has been lost from each engine - it will be useful to know the model (T.....?) as I'm bound to need some oil seals etc.

According to my 1960 Motor Boat and Yachting Manual circa 1960, Thornycroft, built a 40 HP engine which developed 40 HP at 2100 RPM, had 3 5/8" bore with a 4 1/8" stroke and weighed 1125 lbs. The engine was called an RTR4/2.

here is a link to a book and a few other references.

Just a passing comment about engines in 1960, A 50 HP BMC Commodore 3.4 litre Diesel engine cost £350.

Not sure now if this is the same engine as may be Standard Engines as mentioned by Scottie below but could have been marinised by Thornycroft.

Thanks - your right, I’ve had a look around and the engines are based on the Standard 23c engines fitted to MF35's - the engines in Jorvic are the updated version of the 23c fitted to Allis Chalmers tractors in the early 60's, these had the improved head including glow plugs in each cylinder to aid cold starting.

Parts are readily available at a low cost.
