Boat fire , Cowes YH, overnight

I had a 47Kg Propane bottle that leaked from the valve in the bottle, so not zero

I'm not talking about faulty bottles, obviously. All gas bottles are sold with safety caps, most people probably don't use them. I do use the Camping Gaz one as it's impossible to exchange without and the steel valve ball will accumulate water and rust if you don't.

Yes but I usually disconnect and cap the bottle when being left for a long period of time.

I rather take the risk of the boat being burned out as a result rather than taking them home and risk burning the house down.

Quite - though I store spare cylinders in shed 30m from house, to limit danger from exploding gas cylinders if exposed to housefire. If shed catches fire I will just stand a respectful distance and hope it also deals with my out of date flares.

Cylinders are fairly unlikely to spontaneously leak if turned off and even less likely to then spontaneously ignite with no one about. Besides as other said, how would we brew tea in the yard without gas on board.

My other Bristol Channel boat has a meths stove which costs maybe six times as much per year (£60 as against £10) and fills shed or boat with 5 gallons of very volatile spirits in plastic bottles that could well leak. I have often considered converting back to gas. Getting meths in large quantities is a nightmare - £11 per gallon on line, but about £4.50 per quarter litre in bemused hardware shops in remote ports and they only have 2 in stock.

Back to thread on risk, I love that my Cornish boat has gas, its only drawback is that it has camping gas sized gas locker whereas my old long gone Macwester had big calor locker, so even cheaper, lasted longer and I could use propane in winter like my van cooker.

Treated as a crime scene .... but that was over a week ago so probably restrictions lifted by now.

Crime or accident scene ?

And any news on the teenager, even if it was a crime he certainly didn't deserve that sentence, and as far as I know may have been a relative of the owner.

Yes I read that a while ago, doesn't say if crime or accident.

And it seems no-one has thought to enquire after the chaps' health.

Crime scene tape implies that it was being treated, at least initially, as a crime scene. Otherwise they'd have used the ordinary "Police - keep out " tape

You could give the Morriston hopital a call. Let us all know how he is doing when you find out
