Hi , I bough a second hand boat from a well established brokership 4 months ago, they have recently gone into liqudation , I a got a recept for the payment by cheque ,I have been told that they should have given me a deed for the boat , this is the first boat I have bought and knew nothing about deeds for boats .Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Welcome to the Forum Harry.
You probably have nothing to worry about. I presume you have the boat itself, and any keys. The broker should have checked that there were no mortgages outstanding. You do not say what sort of boat, or how old it is. Most recent boats came with quite a bit of paperwork including manuals. One thing you should have on any 1985 or later boat is the original VAT invoice to prove that VAT was paid. Registration, either Part 1 or on the Small Ships Register is optional. If you can give some details of the boat itself, and what if any paperwork came with it I am sure some of the people here can advise what if anything is missing.
Finally, if the brokerage is in liquidation you need to ask the liquidator to hand over any paperwork pertaining to your boat.

I've not heard of "Deeds" either. Is the boat registered, is there a mortgage on it (either yours or someone elses)? I would expect a bill of sale and possibly some assurance that there are no other claims on the vessel if she is not registered. If she is registered the registration authority will know if there are any other claims on her.

Come on you lot - have YOU heard of boat deeds? Or are you frightened of the TROLLS!

Hi many thanks for your welcome and everbody/s input ,yes I have the keys and the boat, berthed in a private gated marina , so, there must be some other paper work still with the dealer , that was not handed over at point of sale i.e title deed or other documents , I think that I went into this deal unaware of any formalities, a shake of the hand and a recipt was sufficient, i

I'm not aware of boats having title deeds. Mine hasn't. I have a proper bill of sale from the brokers, plus the previous receipt, which was written on a scrap of paper. Do you know if the boat is part I or III registered?

Harryhaul, you don't say where abouts you are in the world. I'd assume you're in the states as you use the term "private gated marina". You may get a different answer if you confirm your whereabouts.

Hi , we are in the u.k ,... just a bit of gossip , a great big 4x4 tractor turned up at the dealers locked main gates yesterday planning to tear them down ,so he could get his boat out, three police cars were quickly on the site to calm the guy down,
