I've heard from my guardiennage lady, confirmed in phone call with jfm, that it snowed 4-5 inches last night in Antibes. The weight of snow has caused the bimini to collapse, and has bent some of the frames /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Apparently half the boats on the quay have suffered the same fate.

I would definitely give the gardiennage lady the cold shoulder, she sounds a bit flakey to me!

Alright, I was taking the piste.

(seriously, though - sorry to hear it, quite unexpected for Antibes /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif )

Hi

Yes it has snowed significantly in Antibes today as someone I was doing business with who is there said it caused mayhem to the roads! - I was glad to hear that we are not the only ones who suffer when we get a dusting!

Sorry to hear about your boat.

Stephen

just received pictures, looks like most of the frame needs replacing /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Bad luck - particularly annoying after all the work you've put in this summer improving the boat as well. Hope the repair isn't too painful.

Cheers
Jimmy

Snow is a type of precipitation in the form of crystalline water ice, consisting of a multitude of snowflakes that fall from clouds. The process of precipitation is called snowfall.

Since snow is composed of small ice particles, it is a granular material. It has an open and therefore soft structure, unless packed by external pressure. The METAR code for snow is SN.

Eh?????

This could become one of those unbelievable boaty myths.

Even in the unlikely event of snow there, you couldn't have expected that much damage. It looks mangled as though a squall came through, not just weight of snow!

Bad luck, must have precipitated you right off! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Bad luck. Are you sure it was just the snow? My man what does in Majorca reported several water spouts spotted just offshore Palma on Monday HERE . My boat is the other side of the bay but wasn't damaged
IMHO, the Med weather has definitely changed for the worse in the last 3 years. 2003, 2004 and 2005 were glorious (in fact 2003 was too hot). I particularly remember an October week in 2005 when the temp touched 30degC every day with zero winds. But 2006, 2007 and 2008 seem to have been much more changeable and also with unusual weather events like this. I did read a couple of years ago that the El Nino phenomenon would cause a few years poor weather in the Med or are we seeing the first effects of global warming? Or maybe I've just been unlucky

Bad luck, that frame looks pretty substantial so there must have been a heck of a force to make it buckle like that.

How often does it snow down there?

Don't know about SoF but snow on the Majorcan mountains is quite common and occasionally you get it at sea level. The locals delude themselves about their weather. Any time you get heavy rain/gales/snow/fog/water spouts/tidal surges, it's always the first time it's happened and you, as a tourist, have just been dead unlucky to experience it

the pictures IMO show snow damage as the canvas material is still intact, and the frame is bent downwards sugesting it happened with the weight of the snow

it does snow in SOF altough very rarely, that Aicon owner next by was clever to close the bimini....
might be some s/steel worker can repair this altgough if the bent is tight you will definitly loose the rigidity of the actual frame
