Hi folks,

this must be one of the most active forums on the net - way more traffic than I've ever seen /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Anyway - I spotted an ad for orca boat services - who reckon they can restore gel coat to its former glory without using abrasives. I have a 1967 GRP yacht, so this looks very attractive to me. The cost compares well if I value my own time properly - if you see what I mean.

Has anyone used this type of cleaning, does it work as it says on the tin / packet / web site whatever?

Thanks

Jeff

Many people use these products and they do work very well, however independant marine paint technicians have told me that the dullness on an old boat is like an oxidation a little bit like tarnish on copper or rust on steel. By wiping the oxidation off you are removing not only a layer of oxidation but also weakening the integrity of the original gel coat. Although it looks good short term the effects are detrimental to the original gel coat. They would not recomend it.

Ask any amatuer boat owner and they would however recommend such products.

Some paint manufacturers do not recomend such products but all paint salesman love it and sell it. ie so they can sell more paint.

Phil Carpenter in the Mayflower Marina Plymouth is cheaper and better.
He has given my Moody 38 a full birthday three times in the last 6 years, and I have been delighted each time.
