Hello I,m new to the forum, if my question is silly or in the wrong place please excuse me. I know you can charter a boat for fishing or days/weeks out but I have yet to come across anybody that does ocean going charters (voyage)? As in the U.K. to the States or mainland Europe to the Canaries etc. Do these exist?

Welcome to the forum

You are correct - you won't find anybody to charter a boat for that sort of use. Reasons are pretty obvious but include cost (a 40' yacht has an economic rent of around £2500 a week - multiply that by the number of weeks an ocean passage may take), security (boats are very mobile assets and there is a high risk of non return), regulations (few boats under 50' can be coded for unlimited commercial use) insurance, for obvious reasons. Plus the market is extremely small.

It is much cheaper and more practical to buy a boat, do the voyage and sell it as a proven ocean voyager. as a privately owned boat you do not have to meet commercial coding rules and you will find (if you are competent and properly prepared) insurance possible.

Not the same as chartering, but if you are looking for experience or just the adventure of an ocean crossing, why not try to get a passage as crew on a yacht? The Cruising Association run a crewing service and some owners joining events like the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers take on extra crew, who are generally expected to pay their share.

Thank you guys for your replies, I think I used the term charter wrongly.(my bad).Norman you are thinking what I,m after, passage to different parts of the world by way of yacht, either by paying to travel or being part of the crew.
