Any info please on buying a vessel from the usa?

Specifically, tax implications ie is VAT applicable?

The vessel was built in the UK but has been out of the country for an unknown number of years (guess 10?).

And any other hints and tips welcome.

regards, harpoon

the only people to talk to are the VAT and EU people, who ever they are, to see requirements. all others are nothing more than helpful suggestions that won't help you if you get 'locked out' upon return home to England..

Recommend you read and understand the relevant sections of VAT Notices 8 and 3 (both are are their website) to get relaible understading on the VAT situation. For the RCD info, the RYA and CEProof websites are as good a starter as you will find. There are loads of serachable posts on this forum about it however, as mentioned by the previous poster, it's the hard facts from the relevant authorities that you categorically need.

as has been pointed out many times on these forums, the 'authorities' no longer have dedicated people to help, and you'll be relying on people in call centres who have no idea of law as applied to boats and yachts, and will instead give general advice. Don't take it unlesss you can get it in writing, otherwise worthless.

Instead, take advice from people who know what they are talking about, and post here from practical experience, or from the few qualified people here who post but don't often blow their trumpet (if someone charges £1000 per hour professionally for the advice they give here free, take advantage of it)

I have been following this type of line for myself...will have to check back but if the vessle was built in the EU or non EU vessle had been in EU country prior to 1985 ( date to be checked) it can be brought back to EU country and will not require RCD but you will have to pay VAT at EU port of entry!

Hope this helps
Please double check the info plenty of past posts on this subject
