It appears from bar gossip verified by checking brokers lists that there are some good value for money sailboats to be found in S Africa, particularly relatively new Blue water cruisers in steel. Does anyone have any experience or contacts to confirm this noting that go out there (flying) to have a look is more expensive per mile than going almost anywhere else in the world? Once there apparently the exchange rates (sterling/rand) make living and boats cheap.

Simon, take a look at February 03 Practical Boat Owner - interesting piece on the subject. I'm a SA'n and agree, based on the exchange rates, boat do seem to be cheaper there. Also fly there out of season - fares usually half, but go before cricket world cup as the prices will no doubt rise.
Hope that helps.

Let the record show that I have delt with IYB (International Yacht Brokers) in Durban in the past... I am probably better off for not having concluded a deal through them (IMHO of course).
