A hire boat called a Mayday yesterday as they were agound on Braydon Water on the broads near Gt Yarmouth.
A helicopter was called and lifted off the "crew" I quote "because they did not want to wait for high water" The boat was at an angle but in no danger of capsizing.
The TV coverage clearly shows the craft OUTSIDE the clearly marked navigation channel.
This may have been caused by engine failure but no mention of this on the TV coverage.

This is a regular occurrence - but as far as I know it's the first time the helicopter has been called ! The channel across Breydon is clearly marked - holiday makers ( who make up the bulk of those going astray) seem to have no idea 'what those red and green posts are for !
Very rarely is engine failure the cause. It used to be the case that they were left until the next tide - seems that liability may have changed all that !

Funnily enough I just read a report on the incident on the Gt Yarmouth and Gorleston FB page here

In summary, it was a hire boat that ran aground and due to listing heavily those onboard were fearful that it might capsize. Lifeboat attended and it was them that called in the coastguard helicopter.

The channel is well marked on Breydon but it is easy to stray if you take your eye off the ball for a short time (don’t ask me how I know that)!

What's funnier is these days the roles are reversed :p
