Ex charter boat ads with brochure pictures. Other ads for 100k boats with one picture. I understand that a few years ago it was a hassle but nowadays with phones that can take great pictures surely there is no excuse?

Well the one that just sold on yachtworld was listed at 60k. This one seems to have had a lot of recent spending. But there is not much choice in the post 1990 medium displacement aft cockpit 36-40 ft length range. So the prices hold up I think.

What are you comparing the prices to?

I would agree with you but also shocked at how many expensive boats just have and endless amount of exterior and no interior, or 11 of the twelve pics are of nasa electronics and one bad shot of the boat.

It's just bonkers. Easy to take 100 good photos with a phone and post.

Sorry mate, I was in a real hurry to sell the boat. To busy to tidy it, let alone take lots of pretty pictures. You know how good Starlight 39's are, everyone says so. To be honest I have spent a fortune improving it and that makes this boat is in great condition, hence the fair price.

Don’t know about overpriced, but you obviously haven’t sailed one. And preferably try and find a Mark II, Rival Bowman built one, more recent and with much better interior finish and lower bridgedeck.
I will admit to a certain bias, having owned mine for 11 years and sailed her around Britain and most points between Bergen and Vigo ?

Agreed.

I like to take lots of exterior and interior pics and an interior walkthrough layout video. It's not a five min job and the editing takes just as long, but makes a real difference to the response rate.

By way of complete contrast, a friend of mine has just successfully sold his boat through the Hamble-based outfit Parker Adams. Their USP is that one of the two partners (Parker?) had been a professional photographer. Hence lots of good shots , including some drone footage of the yacht sailing along. Much better use of modern technology to provide potential buyers with a clear idea of what the boat is like.

Pictures are nice. I looked a LOTS of brochure pictures whilst I was looking for my current yacht. I saw a number of models of my yacht at Boat Shows and in Marinas. I even saw a dozen photos of the boat I actually bought but they didn’t ‘sell’ her to me.

I really don’t think that any sensible person would buy a yacht based on photos alone (which might not even be of the yacht being sold). Most on here ‘know’ the value/price range of something that they want to buy. Most on here know who to trust in relation to adverts/descriptions. I know that, if I was selling my yacht, anyone REALLY interested will travel to see it as it is and not rely on photos.

Photos are nice and pretty to look at from your armchair when you are bored…

P.S. The photos in question are not ‘nice’ and would give me an idea of maintenance and upkeep but, if I was looking for a Starlight, they wouldn’t necessarily put me off as I would ‘know’ what that one would be worth to me.

I suspect the latter factor

Hopefully if it was a distress sale (due to illness or death of owner), some kind soul or broker would be willing to at least hide things away for the photos.
Taking photos at short notice of a house for sale occupied by a family with two young children, we helped move the junk around from room to room to clear the one being photographed for a few moments, then dumped all back as went to next room! Sold within a week (needed more tidying and kids round at grandparents for viewing day)

Some sellers also like to trot out the old chestnut "end of season condition" AKA we couldn't be arsed to clean, tidy and declutter. A "cheap" boat can still be a few tens of thousands so why would you not clean it and tidy it up for anybody coming to see it as you certainly would for a car, e.g. If the boat is miles away from where its owner lives surely they can pay somebody to go do it for them...
