I hope you get a reply on this one as I have exactly the same problem on one of my ancient GMC's.I just assumed it was the starter motor as it had seawater leaking over it from a small exhaust leak.Have'nt got round to looking at it yet as its no.57b on the list of ways to scrape the skin off myself.
Regards, Al.

I would make an intuitive guess, that your battery is not being charge whilst the engine is running, but probably is being charged by shore-power whilst left on the pontoon.

Are you sure the engine alternator is working, such that it is delivering charge to the battery whilst running?

You really need to put a voltmeter across the battery terminals whilst the engine is running. It should be around 14.5 Volts (28V for 24V sytem)

If this proves OK, then you will need to measure the Volts at various points, starting with the battery & ending at the starter motor whilst cranking the engine in it's fault mode. The negative lead of the voltmeter is connected initially to the battery negative then finally the starter motor casing.

There is a small possibility there is a dodgy connection to the starter motor, but this does not explain why it seemingly corrects itself regularly.
Hope this helps
Good luck

I am surprised that a starting problem is only number 57b on the list of ways to scrape skin off yourself. Surely from a safety perspective it shoud be number 1? Or do you expect to rely on Seastart or the RNLI when you can't get started after anchoring or whatever?

I agree with Stuart since I had the same problem only that my alternator was putting out 16 volts and frying nicley any new battery that I was putting in at great expense ! dont you just love those boats !

Thanks for your pompous reply. The boat is alongside while I do several repairs to the engines(this one reared its ugly head last week).
I don't appreciate that you are infering that I am reckless.
