Ours shredded its impeller, including the grub screw which locates it in the dog drive from the engine so.....

After replacing the impeller the pump now leaks from somewhere, possibly via the screw which holds the shoe in place.

Does anyone have experience / pointers for making these pumps watertight? If it's not possible is anyone aware of a source for replacement pump - it has a Johnson cover plate.

If all else fails is it possible to use a constant running electric pump instead of this mechanical one?

use a propitiatory gasket sealer (blumels is good & clean to use).
have you replaced the paper gasket on the face plate
an electric pump could flood your engine

If it is the cover that is leaking, replace it with a Speedseal cover which seals with an O ring rather than a gasket.
