I've got a BMC 2500l diesel fitted at the moment which is a bit of a pig to start, although once started it runs fine.

I'm thinking of changing it for a newer, lighter, quieter engine but don't want to change the shaft and prop. I would like to hear what people would recommend. The boat is a 10T motorsailer.

Almost all modern engines are lighter and easier to start, against that your engine at the moment is still sought after as it has a timing chain rather than a rubber timing belt.
To find a modern engine with a timing chain does narrow your choice but it’s a more sensible option.
