hope somebody can help me, i,v just bought a boat with a 1500cc bmc petrol engine in it, if i change to a 1500 bmc deisel engine will the gearbox fit or will i have to have the plate altered, cheers

Seeing as noone else has answered.

I have both a 3.8 diesel BMC and its equivalent petrol BMC and they both take the same gearbox. Don't know about the 1500 though.

Hi. The 1500 cc petrol engine you have in the boat at the moment was called a BMC Navigator and the 1.5 diesel engine made by BMC was called the Captain. Both engines used the exact same block and I recall many years ago a boat with two BMC Navigators being converted to Diesels by fitting two 1.5 diesels whilst using all the existing manifolds and gearboxes etc.. Just to provide some more information, the 1498 cc Morris Oxford and the Austin Cambridge were available in diesel versions way back in the 60s. The BMC 1500 diesel was also fitted in the Post office vans of the 60s which were J2 or J4 designation.

There was a smaller petrol engine called the Veddett which was a marine version of the Morris Minor (1000) 948 cc to be exact. There was diesel version of this also produced for a mini tractor but was never available as a marine diesel.

I think you should go for it but the Diesel will be noisier so include some good quality acoustic insulation in your budget.
