bmc engine and gearbox

hi
my motor sailor is fitted with a 2.2 bmc commander engine and what i have been told is a thornycroft or bmc manual gearbox i would like to change the oil in the gearbox but am unsure what type of oil to use. any info on this or the engine would be greatly received

I had one of these on an engine I bought second hand that had gear oil in it and had so much drag in it the gearbox couldnt be turned over in neutral when disconnected from the engine.

From this I surmised that it took engine oil. If you find out for sure could you please post that info.

Acording to my manual on the BMC Vedette, the gearbox uses 20/30 standard engine oil, the reduction box uses 140.
