Hello

I have recently had my outboard engine repaired, had new impeller fitted and a full service, few days later I got round to fiting it back onto my cabin cruiser and then I set sail down the canal, after 30 mins trouble free sailing I came to some locks and was approached by an elderly couple who asked would I mind sharing the locks with them, I agreed and strapped my cabin cruiser to the side of there Narrowboat and off we went... I agreed to do all the opening and closing of the gates etc if the old gentleman would drive the boats. Everything went fine well so I thought When I got to the bottom lock and I started my engine I could immidiatley see there was lots of blue smoke coming from the top of my engine, underneath the plastic cover, I noticed that the water was still coming out the top of engine to cool it, as I thought that may of got blocked but it wasent... I highly suspect that the old gentleman as reversed his Narrowboat in one of the locks and as sent my outboard engine into the real wall of the lock and crunched it.. I was just wondering if anyone could advise me on what kind of damaged my of been caused, if there's any things I should be checking before I remove the engine and pay a marine engineer to look at it, any advice would be great, Thankyou :)

id have thought any physical damage would be obvious and that if it had been bashed into a lock wall there would be evidence of that.
You dont say if its a 2 stroke or 4 stroke engine. If its a 2 stroke give it a good hard run and see if the smoke clears.

Have you taken the cover off to see where the smoke might be coming from.

The engine is a 4 stroke Yamaha 9.9. After reading your reply I removed the engine top to see were the smoke was coming from, it's coming straight out of the exhaust, lots of blue smoke, i immidiatley switched the engine off to prevent any more damage being caused.. When I took the top off the engine I could not see any obvious signs of damage nor could I see any damage to the plastic cover on the engine... It's a wierd one this, any help or advice would be appriciated, I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to engines but I'm aware blue smoke means that the engine is burning oil, I'm unsure what to do next, does anybody know a reason why lots of blue smoke could be coming from the exhaust ?? I would look forward to hearing any of your responses. Kind regards

It is possible that you have got oil in the cylinders after the service. Either the engine was laid down incorrectly, or the sump was over filled. Have you checked the oil level?

Nobody as been anywhere near my fuel tank... My heads telling me the guy must of reversed in the lock and unknowingly sent my outboard into the wall and crushed it, there's no other explanation, just hope it's not going to be expensive to fix

Dont forget the tell tale water jet confirming the water pump is working is just a small diversion from main cooling water. Is it hot to the hand? Perhaps cooling water in out vents at bottom of keg blocked? Surely any physical impact would have left a mark or crunched the prop?
