Hi there!

Fenders out, big scratches against a concrete wall.

How can I fix this? Should I use gelcoat apply + sanding + polishing or there is any polish wax/composite which will make it disappear while polishing?

Thanks!

Others will probably want to know if the scratches are just superficial ie damage to the gelcoat only or whether the scratches have to be filled.

If you google "matching gelcoat colors" you'll find you are not Robinson Crusoe as 73000 people have watched one of the video clips!

There is no chance of restoring the scratch without using a coloured filler. I was lucky when my HR blue line got scratched during a gale when someone in my absence removed a mooring line. I attacked nasty-looking patch about the sized of a palm print with 1200 wet-and-dry and then cutting compound and polish, and it is now invisible, but you can't create blue where there isn't any. You could possibly touch up with Humbrol enamel as a temporary measure and deal with it properly at the end of the season.

That's not blue gelcoat, looks like blue paint on top of white gelcoat. You've scratched through the thin paint layer and into the white gelcoat underneath, so it now needs new blue paint (and possibly fairing first, depending on how deep the gouges are). This is trickier than gelcoat repairs due to the thin layers involved. Will be quite a challenge to match the hue, fair the surface and polish it to blend in and end up level.

If it was a real blue gelcoat hull, the blue would (hopefully) be thicker, and the layer underneath would be the fibreglass, which isn't white.

You can have a go with blue coloured gelcoat (still need to match the colour), which will make the fairing process easier, but it may then end up fading (from UV) at a different speed from the paint and look wonky 6-12 months later.

If you are near the south coast pm Paul Shotton (scoresby on here, or pm me for his mobile)
He will make it completely go away. And he doesn’t charge a king’s ransom.

Yes, you're right, it's blue paint over white gelcoat. I thought a repair with gelcoat will be easier and the paint is also fading some areas because of the several polishing (once a year). I'll try (again) to get the color code/id/brand...

Can't have answers from the company regarding the color code but the invoice says: 'Painture de Coque Bleu Navy'
Any guess on the color? Which paint brands are usually used to paint boats?

Thank you
