Here in Lymington the wind was blowing some last night, laid down a bit this morning but from about 10 onwards the wind has been increasing dramatically. Now, at 2pm we have a steady 50 knots.

I went down to Yachthaven to check my boats and was nearly blown off my feet. Some boats will be the worse for wear as their owners have set their fenders too low and their topsides are getting a pasting from the pontoons. The guys at the marina are re-tying boats all over the place.

At Keyhaven, the wind coupled with a high tide have made life interesting for the boats still in the river, the sea has topped the quay. One of the boats will need a new headsail as their current one is shredded.

On the sea front we have waves topping the promenade and generally looking quite rough. Elemental, my dear Watson.

BBC weatherman said there had been a recorded gust of 92mph off the Isle of Wight at lunchtime. 92mph!

Channel weather buoy recorded 72kts of wind and wave height of 5.9m at 1200. Glad I'm not out there...

Same here

I just got back from LYH too, decided it was too dodgy to get on board (having intended to bring some stuff home), with nobody else around to drag me out the water if necessary!

Looking at the forecast websites, shows how wrong they can be.

Eg XC weather is showing it was 48kts at 1400 but still forecasting only 31kts at 1500.

Metcheck similar, Windguru even more wrong.

Which proves SimonK's oft repeated point that computerised models cannot be trusted, esp around the coasts.
