Paid deposit on pretty new steel boat, subject to survey, but surveyor found blistering on bottom. Yard say they will fix it but worried that newish boat should be so faulty. Can I walk and recover deposit?

If you are not happy, get out of it, you don,t say how newish, or how severe, is the blistering under the steel primer or between coats? but when I sold my 6yr old steell 44, she had no blistering, I would be concerned if I were you.
Of course, I suppose it depends on the suggested cause? but you may be looking at blasting and recoating, at least.

Re fixing it, if they just blast the bottom and re-paint it, it is possible that the same problem will return unless the cause of the blistering is found.
It could be due to electrolysis, where there are stray currents running through the hull, eg from an electrical circuit grounded on to the hull. I think that the general theory is that all electrical circuits on steel vessels should have returns on them, and not be grounded to the hull.

Steel boats can be a lot of hard work keeping the rust at bay, my brother lives on his yacht in the med, hes had several all GRP but about five years ago bought a steel Bruce Roberts. He spent all his time trying to keep the rust at bay at eventually gave up and last year went back to glass! its more easily maintained, easily repaired by almost anyone, and lastly will not act like a submarine if you get a hole in it! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

IF IT IS ON THE SEAMS THEN IT COULD BE THAT THE SLAG WAS NOT REMOVED 100% WHEN SHE WAS WELDED, AND WERE THE ANODES EATEN ? IF NOT THEN LEAVE IT.
