The fwd line on the second reef has been pulled through, and while it still appears to be connected internally, it will not go back into the boom , Ie reef down, when I pull in the second reef... the aft reef line is fine... just that forward line, which now wont go back into the boom...... any explanations of how it works, and how I can tackle this would be appreciated... it all looks like witchcraft to me.....

Selden do a pdf here which shows you what is in your boom, scroll down to Single Line Reef.

You will need to take the cap off the boom (gooseneck end) to rethread it if you have lost the luff reefing line, otherwise you might just be able to rethread the leech line from the after end of the boom.

Hope this helps,
Tony

In the Seden system, the forward, luff, line is pulled by a car, which in turn is pulled back along the boom by the reefing line which runs continuously, via blocks, to the leech. A suggestion is that if this car has been pulled too far forward, it is possible that it has passed beyond some internal obstruction within the boom, eg the tops of the kicker attachment screws, and will not go back,( how do I know?). You might be lucky and cure this by detaching the boom and inverting/ shaking it, allowing the car to come aft again.
If this isn't the problem, then it sounds as if you will need to take off an end piece and poke around. IMHO, removing the aft end is better. Replace it using SS machine screws and nuts, in case it happens again

Get rid of the blocks inside the boom as they can 'topple' and cause the problems.

I have single line reefing which has blocks on the sail in the place of the reefing cringles. So the single line runs, from the boom, up through the block on the aft cringle, down and back to the block on the end of the boom, then through the boom to the mast end of the boom, round and up past the block on the forward end of the boom through the forward cringle block on the sail, down the mast thhrough a bullseye, down to a deck block, through the deck organiser and back through a deck clutch. Simple, one line, no hidden problems and simple to operate.

Well actually its been pretty good, not much friction, easy to use... but then someone /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif pulled the line out too far when raising the main........ But I do think that the damn things are overly complex, and I was thinking about just not bothering with it and using the cringle on the hook.... which gives a better set anyways....

Taking it out and using just one line is probably a better solution.... if we can keep the friction down...

Thanks for the rest of the tips guys!

with the cringle on the hook it means that someone has to go to the mast to reef. The whole idea of single line reefing is to avoid that. The selden single line reefing has a mechanical advantage for the leech line but on our boat there is not enough length to the boom to accommodate e really long leech line to allow a really deep reef so, not having malcb's blocks on the sail, we ended up going for a 2 line reef for the 3rd reef.

Rethreading the luff line will be tricky. Maybe you could try taping the new line to the remaining reef line and using a batten to push it onto the correct pulley in the car.

My Westerly Storm had a single line reefing system that was jammed.

All I could see inside the boom was some mildewy rope hopelessly tangled around a block that roamed freely in the boom. Apparently this was an early system and might not be what you have.

Anyway, a rigger advised that they often jammed and thaat I should just bin it as it was better to have to go up to the mast than to have a jammed reefing system with a blow brewing.

It is indeed a good system but if a line runs free it's a bit of a dog to rethread it.

All is clear when you remove the black end from the boom. Warning: you may pull the two cars out to check the rove of the lines - what then happens is that the 4 small black plastic runners/wheels drop off the car and fall overboard. You are snookered - buy some more (£1.50 EACH!) and don't let it happen again!
