Bleeding Diesels

Is there a downside to putting a 'squeeze' bulb in the fuel line to assist when bleeding the engine. I've just cleaned my tank and replaced the filters and never look forward to bleeding the system because it takes ages using the lift pump and is awkward. It occurred to me that putting an outboard bulb in the line would very quickly push the fuel through.

A better way than using a bulb would be to fit a hand primer which is intended for use with diesel. They attach on to the input of the separator. They are available on p38 of the ASAP printed ASAP catalogue which is available from http://www.asap-supplies.com/ Remember to order a banjo and 2 seals

I had the same problem and for a while did use an outboard priming bulb - not connected up permanantly but I replaced a short section of hose temporarily with it.

About fitting one permanantly the reason I did not was I was not sure of its ability to withstand diesel (probably Ok but it is designed for petrol) and also its fireproofness (again this must be OK given its intended use but its putting a component in the fuel line which doesn't have ISO 7480 stamp and isn't traditionally there).

In the end I replaced the filter with one that has a built in priming pump and its made bleeding/changing fuel filters a trivial task rather than an hour or two of fiddling. The filter with a built in hand primer is available from ASAP supplies.

i have an agglomerator in the line between the tank and the engine, i.e. it's upstream from the lift pump so v. difficult to bleed. i fitted a priming bulb in the line and now use it when bleeding the whole system as it's much easier than using the lever on the lift pump.

i wasn't sure how well a standard outboard type would react with diesel but bulbs are fitted to the citroen/peugeot 1900 diesel car engine so i got a spare from a dealer. cost £20-25 but at least i know they are reliable and safe.

Just a thought but are there any electrical in line pumps that would do? That way you press the button and sit back while the diesel is pumped right up to the injectors and all you have to do is let the air out.

About 4 years ago I fitted an o/b engine fuel priming bulb just above my engine (Beta BZ82) & close to the fuel filter. Working perfectly since. Very handy as I can open/close the bleed screw while operating the bulb with my other hand. Useful when on your own. There is no problem with the bulb handling diesel. I was a bit anxious about the heat from the engine but so far all ok. I check it regularly.

Some Diesel cars use these bulbs as you mentioned, they are in the fuel line between the tank and filter.

Citroen and Peugeot use them.
