Checking all my skin fittings etc this week, I was surprised to find that all the exposed brass in the cupboard below the heads basin is matt black. This includes the visible threads of the skin fittings, which externally are bright.

The black is soft and easily scraped.
The other brass fittings in the boat (cooling water inlet and galley sink outlet) are bright.
Hard to believe the black has been applied deliberately, but what could cause it?
Any ideas please?
(The heads is rarely used for more than a pee so it's not the curry!)
