Watched it again, I'd forgotton just how brilliant it was (is)

Edmund: That Farrow bloke you executed today, are you sure he's dead?
Baldrick: Well I chopped his head off, that usually does the trick.

Yes the Blackadder seris was great although I must say I had more of a fondness for blackadder goes forth (although that may have something to do with being old enough to be allowed to stay up to watch it when it was first on) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
Cult viewing at my house with the line "more cunning than a fox who has been made proffersor of cunning at Oxford university" is a favorite. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Agreed. Brilliant!!! Have the complete collection on DVD - our favourite set - always seem to spot something new each time we watch.

The last episode of Blackadder IV was all the men going over the top. Ben Elton's uncle is a Professor of History at Cambridge. He wrote to complain about the Fourth Series. After watching the final episode he apologised.

You have woman's purse m'lord! I'll wager that purse has never been used as a boat with 12 shipwrecked mariners tossing into it!!

Hi Bruce,

As Jeremy_w says, it was about going 'over the top' on the Western Front. The episode started with the usual comedy, gradually got a bit more serious and, frankly, I found the contrast of the last scene or two a bit of a shock as they all run towards probable death.

Sobering.

Cheers Jerry

the last episode was much like the rest with the usual jokes, then they went over the top and it was done in slow motion with the flashes of the guns. we were stunned the first time we saw it and even after many repeats it's still a very powerful scene, especially in contrast to the silliness preceding.

And last night:

(Blackadder off to sail round the cape)

Melchett:
Lord Blackadder. Our foremost cartographers have given us a map of the area you'll be traversing.

Edmund:
But it's blank!

Melchett:
Yes, they'd like you to fill it in as you go.

and has been mentioned:

Rum: Ha. -Aah! You have a woman's purse! I'll wager that purse has never been used as a rowing-boat. I'll wager it's never had sixteen shipwrecked mariners tossing in it.

Laughed and laughed.
